the Levee Breaking

Jamison Sarteschi

The common attraction to my work is in the use of color: vibrant, layered, full of light. The whimsical creatures and enigmatic use of swirls and lettering create a sarcastic yet innocent flavor. The layering, applying, removing and overlapping of coats and semi-transparent layers combines to give the work a depth of field that is not immediately obvious. It eventually reveals itself, like human personalities, with additional consideration, creating a time-release effect on the onlooker as additional layers become apparent with further observation. Small clumps of line-drawn figures and shapes tend to add an “Hieronymus Bosch” landscape quality while creatures, human, animal, and fantastical, appear in various contexts of fear, contention, and at best, puzzlement.
