Pufferfish is another Northwest band in a collection of great ones flying the “freak folk” flag. Banjo? Check. Accordion? Check. Harmonica? You get the point; just add some harmonies and you’ve got all the trappings of a great bluegrass band. Pufferfish however, have made their own lane. They’re a little bit country, a little bit rock & roll, and some bluegrass and folk wrapped in the middle.

While not quite as out there as a band like Animal Collective, they do share that same spirit of discovery and experimentation with their music, enlisting almost any instrument they can get their hands on. Swell is the long awaited follow-up to their impressive 2006 debut, Hello Zero, and a great introduction for new fans. Call it alt-country with a twist.
