deVries (pro. deh-VREESE; Dutch def. from/of the North) is the new band of Travis DeVries, lead singer of legendary Seattle shoegaze band The Turn-ons. Travis moved to NYC in the summer of '08 after completing the recording and mixing of Death to God. It was produced and mixed by Turn-ons’ producer and member, Erik Blood (The Moondoggies, Tea Cozies, Romance), and then mastered by legendary producer, Kramer (Galaxy 500, Low, Sufian Stevens & former Ween, Butthole Surfers, Bongwater member). Upon receiving the tracks for mastering, Kramer enthusiastically proclaimed “Travis, you’re a fucking genius. This music is just too good” and “this shit is amazing.”
deVries' sound hearkens to the reining days of Britpop/Madchester bands such as The Stone Roses, Suede, and Ride. Travis' lyrics touch on a wide range of range of topics from trans-gender children(Boys are Bores) to global warming(Slowing Down/Polar Shores), and economic upheaval(Black Thursday Repeat). His gift of weaving lush orchestrations & intensely personal lyrics makes these songs sound familiar and emotionally comforting in ways not experienced in most other music today.
Travis has continued deVries in Brooklyn with a new group of NY musicians and has started playing shows and writing new songs with them. The follow-up to Death to God, I Have Chosen Hell, will be released in 2010.
